New Year’s Greetings

Updated:2022年1月3日更新 print

A happy new year!

Last year, from the time of assuming the post of governor in April, I continued to dedicate all my energy to fighting against COVID-19 and restoring and recovering the areas affected by the five consecutive years of torrential rains.

Particularly for COVID-19, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all citizens and businesses for their understanding and cooperation, as well as medical workers and all the others who underpin society for their commitment.

This year, overcoming COVID-19 is above anything else. While striking the best balance with socio-economic activities, we will rebuild our battered local economy. In addition, we will continue to make all-out efforts to restore and recover the affected areas and proceed with anti-disaster measures, such as river system improvement, to realize disaster prevention and reduction and increase our disaster resilience.

In the Chinese zodiac, 2022 is the year of the tiger, suggesting the arrival of spring, when plants begin to grow. We will make 2022 a year for generating new growth with our eyes on the world and with our eyes on future development.

To this end, we will place our focus on the following four points.

The first is to foster human resources who will underpin the next generation.

The development of Fukuoka Prefecture is underpinned by human resources. We will ensure children’s access to fulfilling education no matter where they are and provide support for young people to take on challenges to realize their dreams. At the same time, we will focus on the development of human resources who will make their presence felt and serve as the key players in a wide variety of fields, such as industry, economy, sports, culture, and arts.

The second point is to develop Fukuoka into a prefecture selected by the world.

By leveraging our strong points, we will strategically attract many more companies to Fukuoka so that the prefecture will be home to large-scale data centers, which support the digital society, and serve as an advanced semiconductor base. Using the industry-academia-government cooperation framework Team Fukuoka, we will also strive to develop into an international financial hub.

The third is to generate industries with high growth potential.

Looking to the future, we will generate new industries with high growth potential, such as those related to biotechnology, robotics, space, and blockchain.

Moreover, we will ensure as early as possible that the Sea of Hibiki is designated as an area for promoting maritime wind power generation. Also, while manufacturing CO2-free hydrogen, we will form a manufacturing hub and a cluster of related businesses in the prefecture and encourage SMEs to participate in the market, thereby striving to contribute to realizing a carbon-free society.

The fourth point is to promote the One Health project.

We will formulate the Fukuoka Prefecture One Health Promotion Action Plan and establish the One Health Center as the hub for putting the One Health concept into practice. In November this year, the Federation of Asian Veterinary Associations (FAVA) Congress will be held in Fukuoka Prefecture. We will take this opportunity to disseminate information on our One Health initiative to Asia and the rest of the world.

At the same time, we will proceed with community building efforts to realize the principle of regional revitalization, namely establishing an environment where citizens can work in familiar surroundings, live a long, healthy life, and give birth and raise children without any worry.

Together with Fukuoka City and the local business community, we will take on the challenge of bidding to host the G7 summit in 2023. Taking this opportunity, we will disseminate our strong points to the world so that we can attract many more companies and excellent human resources both from Japan and overseas and realize our vision of “development of Fukuoka into a prefecture selected by the world.”

These efforts are in line with the philosophy of the SDGs, promoted to achieve a society where “No One Will Be Left Behind.” While valuing our bonds with the citizens of the prefecture, we will proceed with these efforts, accomplish further growth and development of Fukuoka as an appropriate leader of the Kyushu region, and enable both adults and children to live a life with many smiles in the prefecture without any worry.

I would like to conclude by sincerely hoping that 2022 will be a wonderful year for you.
