Are you familiar with “One Health”?

Updated:2020年11月25日更新 print

The novel coronavirus, which has been rampaging across the world recently, is said to infect both animals and humans. Here, let us introduce the “One Health” concept, an approach very important in developing measures that can address so-called zoonoses (diseases—such as those caused by the coronavirus—that can spread between animals and humans).

◼ What is “One Health”?

Humans, animals, and the environment are all interconnected, so to protect human health, it is essential that we also protect the health of animals and the environment. An approach where people in all related sectors collaborate to tackle and solve health problems by perceiving the unity and interconnectedness of the health of humans, animals, and the environment is called “One Health.” Today, to combat health problems related to zoonotic diseases (such as rabies and bird flu), antibiotic resistance (the ability of microbes to develop resistance to antibiotics), and other similar problems, efforts based on this “One Health” concept are becoming increasingly pervasive throughout the world.

◼ 2021 Fukuoka Prefecture International “One Health” Forum

In response to the global spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), Fukuoka Prefecture will hold the 2021 Fukuoka Prefecture International “One Health” Forum, which has been planned to serve as a platform to share challenges and problems concerning “One Health” efforts between specialists from different fields closely involved in these efforts and to communicate such challenges and problems to many across the world.
This forum will be held online via a website specially launched for it and be viewable by anyone. Besides lectures on “One Health” issues, those on the latest ideas and findings concerning the novel coronavirus are also planned to be delivered at the Forum. We strongly hope that a great number of people will be interested in the Forum and will watch it through the website.
