Tuberculosis
1. What is tuberculosis?
Tuberculosis is a disease caused by the entry of bacteria called “tubercle bacilli” into the body, and the disease could be transmitted via air by coughing or sneezing. In Japan, about 18,000 new cases occur every year.
2. Symptoms of tuberculosis
Since tubercle bacilli increase mainly inside the lungs, patients usually develop cold-like symptoms, such as coughing, sputum, fever, and difficulty in breathing. If you experience coughing or sputum persisting for more than two weeks, suspect tuberculosis and seek medical attention. The main treatment of tuberculosis is medication. Although the treatment period varies depending on the symptoms, patients usually have to take medicine for about six months.
3. How to prevent tuberculosis
Try to spend a healthy lifestyle to boost your immunity. Infants should receive vaccination against tuberculosis (BCG).
