Influenza
1. The difference between influenza and common colds
In general, colds are caused by various viruses. Most common colds mainly cause sore throat, runny nose, sneezing and coughing, but systemic symptoms are rare. Fever is not as high as in influenza, and the illness rarely becomes severe.
Influenza is a disease caused by infection with the influenza virus. Infected persons relatively rapidly develop symptoms, such as fever of 38 degrees C or higher, headache, joint pain, muscle pain, and a sense of general fatigue. They also develop common cold-like symptoms, such as sore throat, runny nose, and cough.
2. When is influenza prevalent?
Seasonal influenza is an epidemic disease, and once an epidemic begins, it spreads to many people in a short period of time. In Japan, the disease is usually prevalent from December to March.
3. Effective ways to prevent influenza include the following:
(1) Pre-epidemic vaccination
Influenza vaccines have been reported to be effective in preventing aggravation of the disease.
(2) Hand washing when coming home
Hand washing is an effective way to physically remove an influenza virus that has adhered to the hands and is a basic preventive measure against all infectious diseases, including influenza. We recommend washing your hands and gargling when coming home also to prevent other common infectious diseases.
(3) Maintaining moderate humidity
When the air dries, the mucous membranes of the throat become less protective and more susceptible to influenza. It is effective to maintain an appropriate humidity (50 to 60%) by using a humidifier, etc., in a room where the air tends to become dry.
(4) Sufficient rest and balanced nutrition
Get sufficient rest and maintain balanced nutrition every day to increase your body's resistance.
(5) Refrain from going out to crowded areas
If an influenza epidemic occurs, refrain from going out to crowded areas, especially if you are elderly, have an underlying illness, are tired, or lack sleep. If it is unavoidable to go out and be in a crowd, wear a non-woven mask that can prevent droplets to some extent since it is considered to be an effective protective measure. However, try to minimize the time you stay in the crowd.
