1. What is highly pathogenic avian influenza?

The avian influenza virus is carried in the intestines of many wild birds, mainly waterfowl such as ducks. In particular, the virus that can be highly deadly for birds is called highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus.
H5 subtype and H7 subtype are known as HPAI viruses.

Humans do not usually become infected with the avian influenza virus unless they come into close contact with infected birds or their carcasses.
If you find a dead or debilitated wild bird, follow the following instructions:

 ・ If you come in contact with the bird or its excrement, gargle and wash your hands.
 ・ If you notice any abnormality in your health, such as fever, after contact, consult a hospital immediately and tell your doctor that you came into contact with a dead wild bird, etc.

3. To those who handle birds

Those who handle birds at poultry farms, zoos, etc. should be aware of the following cautions to prevent infection to humans.
